donating blood

Post by hercules on Wed Mar 12, 2008 9:50 pm

according to the BPA giving blood is not compatable with skydiving. i find this a very regretable and sad position to adopt. many skydivers have been saved by blood transfusions over the years. i wonder what your opinion might be? ive been doing it since 1968 and feel just fine ; blood doning that is blue skies and happy days alien

blood giving

Post by Cai on Thu Mar 13, 2008 7:23 pm

Oh man, so does that mean one cant give blood if they jump full stop? I started giving at the end of last year and jumped 4 days after giving and i felt completely fine. So do they not want us to give blood at all now whilst jumping, because ill have to cancel the next appointment if so.

I'm totally with you on this, as you said many skydivers have been saved due to transfusions. Surely it must be up to us and the doctor who decides weather or not we should jump. I checked when I was last there and asked if it would be ok to jump in 4 days, and they clearly said yes. As you and other doners know they give you a 48 hours no activity period and then you're up and running again.

Is there any way we can get that changed?

Blood Donors

This is what the BPA say!
Sport parachutists are advised that parachuting and giving blood are not compatible. Whilst the quantity of blood is quickly replaced after donation, the necessary oxygen retaining qualities required at altitude are not.

From a personal point of view - they don't say you can't, just its not compatible.
I leave it 4 days before jumping after giving blood and have had no problems.
I also Scuba dive and asked this question - they have no such restrictions.

My view is this - everyone is different and giving blood will affect us all differently. Try going for a short run after giving blood, if you get out of breath quicker than normal (I do) then leave it a few days and try again.

Hope this helps and don't stop giving blood, i might need it someday. Cool
